Mastery Paths in a Course
Customized Learning Through Mastery Paths
What is Mastery Paths?
Mastery Paths allows you to create personalized learning experiences based on performance and student choice. You can enable Mastery Paths to automatically assign coursework based on the score achieved for a previous assessment. This provides multiple opportunities to show and achieve mastery in a course.
Benefits of Mastery Paths for Instructors:
- Plan curriculum differentiation instead of doing something that is reactive
- Adjust content and activities students need to achieve course objectives
- Individualize engagement with students efficiently
- Quickly set up conditional release for students

▶︎ Mastery Path Vocabulary
Before learning how you can create a Mastery Path, it will be helpful to review some commonly used terms associated with MasteryPaths. Please read through the terms and definitions on the slides below.
Term | Meaning | Example |
---|---|---|
Source Assignment | The assignment in a module that is given to all students and launches the MasteryPath. The student performance on this assignment will determine the MasteryPath that is automatically assigned to them. | |
Configuration Page | Allows instructors to add additional items from the modules list as conditional items that are only assigned to specific students through conditional rules. The configuration page for a conditional item is located in the item's MasteryPath tab. | |
Conditional Rules | Conditional items are assigned to students based on a set of rules in three scoring ranges. After the initial assignment has been graded (either automatically or by the instructor), the student's score designates which conditional item(s) will be assigned as a learning path. |
