What is Disciplinary Literacy? What does it have to do with my classroom? *

Presenter: Rachelle S. Savitz, Ph.D., assistant professor of adolescent literacy at Clemson University

Dr. Savitz is the recipient of American Reading Forum’s Gary Moorman Early Career Literacy Scholar Award, finalist for the International Literacy Association’s Timothy and Cynthia Shanahan Outstanding Dissertation award, as well as Secondary Reading Council of Florida’s Reading Teacher of the Year award. She has been a K‑12 literacy coach and interventionist and high school reading teacher. She researches and teaches about disciplinary inquiry-based learning, analysis and use of young adult literature, teacher self-efficacy, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. She has published articles on inquiry-based learning, analysis and use of young adult literature, and response to intervention. She has co-authored Teaching Hope and Resilience for Students Experiencing Trauma: Creating Safe and Nurturing Classrooms for Learning with Drs. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey and has publications in Teaching and Teacher Education, Literacy Research and Instruction, and Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy.

Description: Across the country, teachers are increasingly being asked to support literacy within their curriculum across all disciplines. Teachers are being asked to embed content-area reading and writing strategies and disciplinary literacy within their instruction. But how are those connected and related to one another and what does this mean for teachers? This session will provide an overview of both, discuss what they mean for all teachers, and the benefits of blending these two approaches to support all students. A few examples will be provided and there will also be a space for questions and discussions from participants.

Dr. Lawrence was a middle school teacher and coach in Boston Public Schools for ten years. He completed a three-year postdoc at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was subsequently hired at the University of California, Irvine School of Education where he published extensively on secondary literacy interventions. He is the creator, current CEO, and board member Reading Ways, which specializes in content-specific literacy for skillful reading. He is a member of the Ohio Adolescent Literacy Network and was a featured speaker at the 2021 Ohio Literacy Academy.

Target Audience: All Content Teachers

Description: In this session Dr. Lawrence reviews three practices that support literacy outcomes in any classroom: support of academic language, rich discussion, and the use of multiple texts. Josh then examines differences in how these practices are implemented across disciplines and why attending to disciplinary differences is so important.

Supporting All Learners to Build Literacy: Morphology, Academic Language, and Scaffolding Texts*

Presenter: Dr. Diana Townsend, Professor of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno

Dr. Townsend serves as a Principal Member of the Education Research Scientific Review Panel with the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in the U.S. Department of Education. She is also a member of the Reading Standing Committee for the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). Her research centers on the academic language development of adolescent students, with specific attention to vocabulary, comprehension, and disciplinary literacy. Dr. Townsend's work has been published in Reading Research Quarterly, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, as well as in other journals and multiple books.

Description: This three-part video session comes from the 2020 Ohio Literacy Academy. Part One will help you identify the basic units of the English language, explore meaningful morphemes in the content areas, and plan meaningful opportunities for secondary students to practice using morphemes. Part Two will help you identify key features of academic sentences and paragraphs, identify different types of connective words, and plan actionable approaches for supporting secondary students’ knowledge and use of connectives. Part Three will help you explain the importance of text scaffolding, as well as plan for before, during and after reading scaffolds for content area texts.
